OR IRISH SHORE

goodbye my dear old island
you have
decided to
sink yourself
and the reason
escapes me

and what
compounds the
evil in
my humble
opinion

is that ripping yourself
in half

you can neither strike out
for a French,
or Irish shore

the silver fish sparkle out in a turquoise sea
they show off their streamlined shapes
that he might suffer the sight of curves
perfectly adapted for their marine environment

Oh, trapped on this island, the Professor
longs for touch, for beauty, love
who wrote satire
and risqué poetry

venturing in close the mermaids tease him
flirt, splash, fawn: foaming the water
with the sweep of their beautiful
white or black tails

grapes hang heavy on the vine
paw-paws
huge on the bouhhd

escaped my white sepulcher
my Egyptian tomb

and now they
are bringing students there

hopefully with the life
to resist that doom

BASELINE

it is our baseline
to which
gracelessly, we are
obliged to return

put coins on the eyes of
that shapeshifter, mutating creature
do you think you will
still its soul

no return, resurrection is forever on the agenda
hierarchies of majority, number
being the absolute

and so we
without property

do not own our names
have no right and title to ourselves any longer

the creature
whose desire is everything, is bigger than the Universe,
always longing to measure its wealth
in the sheer mass of
the enslaved

IN QUESTION

I don’t think I can spell “Holocaust”
if I try to on Twitter I will definitely get trolled

And why should I worry myself, accept species blame,
for something that those who are right
told me never happened?

If you accept the truth of that grainy footage
how shall we ever again live in a world
free of irony and satire, divested
of barbaric poetry?

the weight of those souls (as ash, as bone)
there as the lesson whose learning
can never be achieved.

your wealth
might take you
to some higher
ground

but your wealth
created this sea so murderously rising

and you will repeat
and will be found

UNMAPPED

There be no
place of dragons

no
virgin territory

the kingdom of the gray ape
is mottled
good
and evil

(not so spotted
as Satan’s shield)

North
South

apex of beauty
nadir of bestiality
(what could be
more ridiculous about
this map?

he whispered in
an Iago aside)

Oh, and I am monster too, burning the sky
ripping up the earth, poisoning the sea,
with every toxic footstep
across this landscape

monster that crippling itself
feeds on its own

and yet, here I am
trying to shape, to
save, to conserve

to give a different image
a cultured shadow
(ironic, when we have so
provoked the anger of the Sun).

EMPTY

The stage is empty
the audience have
not pitched

the stars are clouded out: so
cannot be used as source of allusion
or point of reference

but the ghosts of all we thought and felt
as a species, this thing called humanity,
are here in abundance

listen, as the wind whistles through the broken stage props, the tattered awnings

here their voices: Hamlet, Othello, Caesar, Lear
listen to the whispered words to
glean a sense of the power,
the command they
believed they had

so much power, too much power,

Oh our dead world, whose last thought was:
with this miracle of destruction
we might all be kings again.
