AND THE UGLY
“Is that which is holy loved by the gods
because it is holy, or is it holy because
it is loved by the gods? Plato
“This means considering paths that take
you to Mars, Jupiter, the nearest star, even
paths that go backward in time, back to
the big bang. No matter how crazy and
utterly bizarre the paths are, you must
consider them.” Michio Kaku
light is
good
light is lovely
light is the excellent
but light
on the other hand
in the palm of your left hand
the Romans called
“hand sinister”
is bad
even
ugly
but let me not try to brain-wash
you here
in poetry we more
likely to
ditch mind-control
throw
it out
of the window (there
is always a window)
let me
not pull
you away from your sunrise
re-orient you 180
to watch a
spectacular sunset
no
all those strong and weak forces
in the hearts of the stars
furnishing you with light
we would
say fresh
from the furnace except
light-speed and distance
time to light a
last cigarette
whilst the light still flourishing
the light still exceeding
and every image in your text telling you
without the light there is darkness, void
nothing to
second-guess
but the light in your back garden
all those suns rising
not
a pretty picture, though filling
you up with
the awe of God, topping up
with killer divinity your life of little faith
submerged by stuff existential
Oh the light should be
flowing
not finishing off
burning the canvas after
last touch to the picture
last thought
to leave you with:
thing brought to life in light, now
light doing the finishing, writing
a closed ending
now the eye
has cloud
has the light, did the light
strategically finish itself?
