AT ALL

“And would suffice.”
Robert Frost

The Universe has
a sloppy ending

I see it is written
into the script.

Tried to
make sense of it
but it is above
my pay-grade
beyond my
rationality level

not that
have not tried
to change it
not that I
did not try
to change it
burning through
an electrical element
creating
a tiny star, if
only in
heat and
incandescence

but this aside
there is no positive spin
to this cosmic tale
which
has no story really

somehow in
the bleakness of the firmament
its billions of light years
we are
doomed to beat ourselves up
again
and again
hoping for narrative structure,
presuming hero’s journey

these great
archetypes of mind
don’t cut the ice
won’t cut it at all.

REVERSED
“I don’t suppose you’re here
for a sandwich”. Dr Walter Bishop,
Fringe

there is
another Universe

an alternate
Universe

and in this
alternate Universe

you are
right this
moment taking
a shit
(forgive my
Anglo-
Saxon)

problem being
that in
this Universe

time and
gravity have
been reversed

which, in this instance,
makes for a very different
set of
policies, protocols
and procedures

SINGULARITY SAM

dare to stuck
try
something at
random

the exhortations to be creative
finding him same time
the shockwave of
colliding singularities happens
to reach us

rewriting definitions
changing the game

need to be cosmic surfer extraordinaire
to surf that gravitational wave

GREEN SCREEN

no flow
to
life
(my life
at least)

only discordance
and disjuncture

(hence this be
a poem hard to
sing along)

yesterday
watched a debate
between Michel
Foucault and
Noam Chomsky

good to
know in
this time of doubt
France still
got the questions;
America the answers

the realm of ideas — hold onto
your horses Plato — still intact,
beaten but
unbowed
(on YouTube at least)

cue
the rest of the world now following suit
dancing to my
personal tune of disaster

something recursive, recalcitrant,
about
stuff of the real

need a
science fiction to speculate
about this path backwards

(no simple
reversing the tape on 2001

watching Star Child returning to
ape roots
thrown into reverse gear
rewinding time at light speed

the star gate closing forever
this time
as we begin

to
forget
everything

and me
wondering
what it was
this thing called
“word”

what
change it might bring

how it might serve us, we
might be
served

by
it

even as it
threatens us
with the shape of fear

no flow
to this life

unless
sans humanity

I dream
of all that we were
all that we
aspired to

buried under
green

blank
green screen

CAFE SANS OLE

we drank tea
swopped mythologies
shared
what we could
across the table

noting up close
and personal
though our
toes once
did touch

perhaps forever destined
to look at each other
from opposite sides
two
parts of
a Hegelian dialectic
an
unwinnable chess game

on occasion we would
take a Hellenistic turn
explore the logos, and all its
vaunted -ologies

but try as we might
there was no
undoing of the done
nor the shutting out
of the looming demolition of the world
as pure hypothesis, abstract indulgence,
speculative fantasy

wistfully,
you did ask
(a note somewhat
off -key) whether
star is
etymologically embedded
in disaster

our contribution to the atmosphere
already heavy
already
all the barometers sensing
a downturn
towards the existentially fraught,
cosmically absurd

as if
the spirit of the place
feasting upon the dystopia
and apocalypse
in our eyes

or perhaps
just sipping, hellcat licking

hard to avoid this
since we speak as we write
act as
we are written

reaching the boundary, singularity,
event horizon of our characters

about to strip
and consume matter with

the weight
of our gravity

where once we might explode like a
Supernova, all light revolutionary

the last word
of our physics will
be very
dark I fear

***

and so,
talking of endings

here we are
already

quite beyond ourselves
our narrative
thread lost

two creatures
worth forgetting

Oh were
this meeting, this cafe
metaphor of something
greater than
fear of finality
of
endgame and
nihilistic creator

not
something you might show
up on a Sky Sports screen

(ending
of everything Plato
every
last Olympian dream)

AE = MC (💥💥)

mortality now a thing
so intimately connected with sky

those stars that seemed so malefic
one could explode
outside your back door

this the physicists’
not astronomers’ delight

and not a thing
we should ever
let lie,
sleep on, tell
ourselves there are
solutions many, aplenty,
ten a penny, the equation
the man with the gray
electrified hair
wrote on the blackboard
so easy, so simple, almost
clairvoyant
even a child, a baby
bashing two
stones, two rattles
a stone and a rattle
together

can figure
it out

bash many many times together
most certainly a spark

MISS MARY

Nineteen years old and pregnant, the young wife of a famous English romantic poet is asked to tell a ghost story. In response she creates a new genre: science fiction.

MISS MARY

little Miss Mary
baby
Inside her

something zig-zagged electric
into her brain

face at the window
monstrous creation

committed it
to paper

that the future
in swallowing her story
might
resolve the
great conundrums of
death
and conception

return
to her horror
in devouring
its own

ANYWAY

This poem
is a fake

it resides
in another place

there is nothing
incredible about it
the wiring that
produced it
can be
copied
can be replaced

follow this thread
deep into the labyrinth
follow it to wheee
intrepid souls travelled
did happen
to lose themselves

thinking it
just a labyrinth
an ordinary labyrinth
a brain-
like labyrinth
that we have played with
since the
beginning of time

not a doorway to Hell
a fake doorway
that works anyway.

IF (AND ONLY IF)

punched in the numbers
waiting for a poem
to spool

heard something rapping
at the door

no
Poe Raven,
no
Mr Lamar
or Marshall Mathers
(either
in the flesh
or
android imitation —
would that
not have been
over
the top weird, poetic
and ironic?)

no it was just
the widow next door
full-time
Muse and
once-
upon-a-time lover

asking me
if I have spare sugar
and
might have
seen her phone

THE QUANTUM POEMS

POWER OF TWO

I love your
electromagnetic radiation

have myself booked
for a session or two

am down
with that black box stuff
and quantum box
(one with
the cat in it)

anything hot
that’s going to radiate me

not involving
speed
of light

to
the power of two

****

COPENHAGEN

cat is
enough of
a paradox

without Bohr
or Schrodinger

I have two
make and female
yet almost duplicates
of each other

they look at me blankly
when I regale them of tales
of a lover who
was practically a
dead ringer for
Danish supermodel
Helena Christensen

but that’s
in the Copenhagen version
not the
multiverse theory

in which
I read my cats this poem
and simply bore them to tears

****

RE-RUN

Nature is
a mirror

in which
you become
what you
see

because of
belief in
the very idea
of mirror

this Nature herself
told me
behind
one
way glass

at the time
so
if clothed or
naked in
the nature
of her discourse

I couldn’t really say
couldn’t really tell.

****

CRAZY IDEA

everything is alive
even the
dead
are alive:

who in their right mind
would give you
such an idea?

perhaps
you meant
just motion

yes, let’s just
backtrack, reach
for compromise

next you will say
this poem
isn’t just words
in digital space or
on piece of paper

that somehow
it’s alive, has
life and
human feeling

what on Earth, on Earth,
would give you
such a crazy idea?

****
