LIKE NOBODY’S BUSINESS

If was in the future
far into the future

I was giving a lecture
on The Moon

talking of the great symbols
of our collective cosmic consciousness

whilst you sat there
steeped in thoughts of death,
thinking of an ancient film

set on this very Moon
where Nietzschean superman
taps into alien presence, alien energies
is lifted out of sad species nihilism

but I
never having seen this film
kept spouting away

something
about the low gravity of this place

time here, I suppose,
moving slightly faster

ideas bouncing around
like nobody’s business

and our blue-brown
on its last legs sickly planet
at least with an
atmosphere however toxic
that might be

how long for that to remain
at the heart of these symbols, be
the fount of all our meanings

this barren, naked Moon
chaste female goddess
queen of
all unconscious mystery

enough
of a home for me.

WHAT THE SERPENT
TOLD ME

in the beginning
there was anger

fire and
water

a million
kinds of venom

every colour and
colour combination

out of the
premise of death

first slithered
life

DANIEL

as fate would have it
I am always
a few steps ahead of you
(nine to be exact)

in the vanguard, negotiating
the nature of
this shriveling distance

odds on, I am first
to dip more than my toes into
that
place of darkness

yes dive deep
when it comes
to total
immersion

as luck would have it,
you so much better
at depths and diving than I

ONCE AGAIN

ONCE AGAIN

the drugs I digested
rewired my brain

turned it into
a rain of
stars
or perhaps confetti

heard Bob Dylan’s nasalize
the vowels in his songs
about apocalyptic weather

which happened as I found myself
in the auditorium waiting
for his Laureate speech

wondering about
the nature of time and
my acute waste of it

sometimes we who
try our hand at poetry can
really lose track of it

destiny and destination
not our most solid suit

which was unmistakably clear
from the sad old cards I’d been dealt

though the
Sun and the Moon and
the Wheel of Fortune in
the Tarot

might be argued to
have predicted

(for all
its magic)

the brutal truth
of my disappearance

my atoms so
perfectly blended into the
fading light and
purpose of
the cosmos

once again

once again

DULL

wrote a poem
for the dead

almost as difficult
as for the dull

in both cases
the words unheard

swirling around
an empty skull

DARKNESS POEMS

ROLLER

I took a roller to
my life’s story

so every scene
could fade to gray

dark gray, light gray
forget the fifty
when it comes
to gray there
are but
two shades only

everything just
a reconfiguring
of life’s single binary:
your
triumphant humanity
of the good, truth and
beauty

versus mine of failure
self-deception and pain

***

LAST POEM

they tried
to save
my last poem
but it
did not

want
to be saved
tried
to escape

but was caught
and burnt
for being
insufferable

(I too
feeling
the
glorious
horror
of
fire

as it
went up in flames)

***

DARKNESS POEM

I stumbled into a deep
and terrible darkness

most people
cannot fathom
and yet it is there

a darkness fit
for Styx or
the Stygian premise
that is Tartarus

down through the innermost
regions of Hades to
that place where
evil is singularity
rages
out of control

rips the black wings off ravens
to colour the sky as is befitting
with their
blood
and black feathers

the sky that is
perfect as
expression

of hopelessness
and pain

***

TAKE

take everything you gave me
all the good, the bad
and the really bad

strip me down to nothingness
where there is nothing to
say, nothing to feel

no words to utter
just the
revelation
of a
nihilism
that nothing can answer

***

Mr 9mm

Mr 9mm sidled up to me
started to speak
at point blank
range

enunciated all
the key points of difference
between myself
and the world

when it came to
matters of
belief, philosophy and ideology

no gainsaying that position
countering that argument

***

ZERO PEOPLE

they are the
zero happiness ones

God created them so
you might feel good
about yourself

easy now to
think
there but
for the grace
go I

truth being
they don’t really suffer
after you
have drawn
the important life
lesson about
being grateful
you are
quite at liberty to
dispose of them
gently, euphemistically,
or, as is
way more fun,
with flamethrowers, icepicks,
chainsaws or sawn-off shotguns

for when it comes
to any reasonable definition
of humanity
they are
hardly to be
considered people

are more like those old
clunky cathode-tube androids
from that low-tec science fiction
film and Tv from
the 1950s

born into lives
without love
it is
really a species
of highest, most
caring mercy
to end their suffering
any way you like

S WORD

you have to love
that startling red
calligraphy

each tiny, deft
masterstroke
as carefully conceived
as if
he were a
master chef
ultimate ninja
at kensho sushi

or if
not love
then to
respect it
on its own
terms
let us agree

pure silk kimono
of world
without shame

the lights flicker
but no, not the lights
it is
of stars (further
S word of
which we are
now speaking)

soon to be silence: eyes
up to Heaven

and there they are
the stars
all gone

consummate art, dead
every one

you killed them singly,
all together, communally
one by one

who cares! They might
not have existed in the first place
(the jury out
forever in this
philosophical case

for which this
very word such
a conundrum)

SURRENDER

gave up poetry
because can
never get
it right
no
point in
it really

the standards
so exact
correction
so cutting

and so
I let the wind
take all my pages
(not wishing
to burn
them)

an act of surrender
in its way
I suppose

as sweet and
satisfying
as a
perfect death

MORE TO THE POINT

I was writing poetry
as if my life
depended on it

felt I could touch death
(tips of my fingers
through that
veil already)

more to the point
it was
death who
brought things home
to me, those
icy, slowing, choking, stifling
digits probing their
way under
my skin

testing the integrity
of more
than just my words.

STATISTIC

it’s an
under-the-
carpet statistic
(that I shouldn’t
really bother you
with when you’re
tucking into
your turkey, Christmas
poem and pud)

some old folk died
froze to death
like Oates and
Falcon Scott
did in
the Antarctic

but these deaths so slight
a passing, so underwhelming
the circulation gone, their
fingers like
fish fingers, the rest
like something you
would pull out from
the bottom of
your deep freeze

and it was
so unnecessary, all
so unnecessary
if they had read the
guide to
life
issues by the
great illuminati
of the party

got rich, taken
the rest
if the precautions

or simply pitched
their tents and
made their
beds in
the corridors
of self-assured power
so thick
with hot air
