LIKE NOBODY’S BUSINESS

If was in the future
far into the future

I was giving a lecture
on The Moon

talking of the great symbols
of our collective cosmic consciousness

whilst you sat there
steeped in thoughts of death,
thinking of an ancient film

set on this very Moon
where Nietzschean superman
taps into alien presence, alien energies
is lifted out of sad species nihilism

but I
never having seen this film
kept spouting away

something
about the low gravity of this place

time here, I suppose,
moving slightly faster

ideas bouncing around
like nobody’s business

and our blue-brown
on its last legs sickly planet
at least with an
atmosphere however toxic
that might be

how long for that to remain
at the heart of these symbols, be
the fount of all our meanings

this barren, naked Moon
chaste female goddess
queen of
all unconscious mystery

enough
of a home for me.

THE GODS

the gods
scorn
our rationality

do not want
us to be rational

would rather we
stumble
bump into
things
fall

into
ineptitude
from grace
into sin

why is this?
you ask
what could possibly
be their angle?

can’t tell you
for the life of me
unless it’s
our
difference

without which

what
sense
their laughter

how on Earth
might
they continue?

only in
act of looking down
can they be said
to exist

INDIGO TOO

blue sky
so blue
every vein in
my brain bursts

until the Universe
is like shot with a
red filter is
like Doppler receding

my hair
my life
red shifting out
of nowhere

and I do love
spontaneous combustion
creation
ex nihilo
(my ex is
a nihilist
after me
she became a nihilist)

but deus ex machina that
almost my logical
definition not
my true love

the idea that the Universe
(slime-ball it sometimes is)
should contrive to
send down a chariot
teleport, use the
Led Zeppelin escalator

to save some golden god-Emperor
whose life is all
about

reflecting the light

save him from crude
poetic justice, rewrite
his history airbrushing all flaws

this after caught flagrante delicto
in act of
swearing my
true love into
absolute self-slavery and
sexual submission

until she is but a discarded, blissful shell
of a character,
item of convenience

sacrifice most divine
(echo with me
always: her last delicious
licking of lips)

blue sky then
lots of cool blues to choose from
ice to cerulean
turquoise, indigo too

AGAIN

For years I dreamt of first alien contact
viewed through the mythology
of classical times

(our world hardly having progressed much, going for
much flimsier structures, shabbier ideas,
reintroduction of slavery,
poetry that
anyone with half an ear
would not wish to read)

and so I scanned the stars once again
carefully, but not exhaustively,
looking for signs
and signals yet
conserving my energies

no sense in arriving home dead
and dispirited
unable to rise in
mortal human homage

should Aphrodite care to visit
(honoring me again).

APHRODITE 2.0

I trolled
your page
it was
all the rage

so many heart emojis
seemed like
Aphrodite’s
second, third
coming

to which I would add
in such a
sublime comparison

every part
looked the part.

RED, GOLD

Red, gold
all that Sun energy
a sight to
behold

so much so
the gods thought
hubris, the gods
got jealous

the dark gods of
the raven, the bear,
hawk and panther

the old Viking gods
with their falcon and
eagle feathers
and armour forged
from ancient Pittsburgh steel

gods who could not bear the thought
of our team turned titan, our team become giants

and so
they
used their powers, as angered gods do,
to hurt and
humiliate, destroy the hope
of something bright, something new

players of light, players
of fire,
players bright as sapphires

diamonds
dug from our Niner mines

to mock them with their fragility, frailty
remind us that they are human
all too human
the golden thread of

their sports’ glory

so easily
cut.

ORPHEUS (IN TOTAL)

eventually I let go
allowed that river to
draw me along

deep underground, to
the edge of the Underworld

and there
in that place of ghosts
and demons of the spirit
under cruelest of tutelage
I learnt to
play my song (my fingers
healing after terrible exertion)
sing
that which lies at
the heart

of everything

and nothing there was
that would not listen, could
not be moved

and why
should it
not be so?

this the pain I had
to pay
the life
to exchange

the Sirens so quiet
they know
here they
have no power, here
the loss
of beauty by
comparison
total

DITHYRAMBS

I said a prayer to
Dionysus,

god of ecstasy
and of wine

asking that he
find me
a woman
of ecstasy

but he sent me
a wife
of wine.

AVATAR FLASH FREDDY MERCURY

Plato asked me
what are
you doing?

and who do you
think you are
with that Flash Gordon helmet
and absurd boots with wings?

and who on the planet would
want to read your poetry
about
bodies, excreta,

fluids and things less
than philosophical.

HERMES

Hermes
popped into
the studio
to get
his wings clipped

no need to
fly when
the news is
instantaneous

no need
for a god
when messages lie
