REVIVAL

they tried
to revive
the philosopher

but he was
too cold

there was, once they
had removed the packaging,

no dotted line along which
to fold
or cut,
for that matter
if he needed surgery

for looking out
through the window
of this perspective

no one could tell
what he would need
for full reparation

whether a canto or a stanza
or just two
lines
might give him
enough life-
blood inspiration to
Lazarus rise

resume
teaching all
the empiricist and
rationalist stuff

impossible
to reconcile

AT ALL

AT ALL

“And would suffice.”
Robert Frost

The Universe has
a sloppy ending

I see it is written
into the script.

Tried to
make sense of it
but it is above
my pay-grade
beyond my
rationality level

not that
have not tried
to change it
not that I
did not try
to change it
burning through
an electrical element
creating
a tiny star, if
only in
heat and
incandescence

but this aside
there is no positive spin
to this cosmic tale
which
has no story really

somehow in
the bleakness of the firmament
its billions of light years
we are
doomed to beat ourselves up
again
and again
hoping for narrative structure,
presuming hero’s journey

these great
archetypes of mind
don’t cut the ice
won’t cut it at all.

PLAN IS

the plan is
to teach the Universe
the physics of Einstein

hope being
that we fill
the galaxy
with mushroom
clouds

take
the unconscious
to every planet
in every solar system

lecture on Plato’s cave
and Republic
the entire post-
Disney history
of pop culture

from fins on Cadillacs
to nuclear theme park

SIDETRACKED

nothing gets sidetracked
like a cat

can see it live when
the pupils get dilated
eclipse the irises like
dark moons

sometimes
I must be cat
(sans fur species, tailless
two-legged variety)

because I get
so sidetracked
my world
pushed to the side
like a typewriter carriage reaching
the end of its line

and how sidetracked I must be
to have ended up in Africa right
on the Ramatlabama border
father
to Bengals
lover of a woman
whose name I mispronounce

spots before my eyes as my tiny big cats
leopard (and cheetah) spot past me

need
to get this sidetrack thing down pat
go off
the rails in this strange, accommodating space
ever so gracefully

ROBUST AND INDEPENDENTLY

saw that Aristotle
feller on TV
(not in a Python
drunk philosophers’ song
sketch either)

no
the power of your
non-argument
had him
at the end
of his tether

his logic not making
much sense to me

true versus
false

are these
the sole values?

how can this
produce the kind
of conclusion

where we all think
as one, sing
in unison

and yet believe we
think our huge little thoughts
(little huge thoughts)
quite robust and independently

MATTER OF FACT

what if
we are all
just alien
artifact?

run
from
research and development
to production line?

no art to speak of
just a pieces kit you
rivet and fix
by numbers paint
colours of
(an oxygen atmosphere)
rainbow

praise be intelligence
for thanks to this
got other
models and myths
I’d rather
cling to

even when
I stalk a poem, circling
the house at night

the stars laughing in concert
in
their
constellations
as I
miss the point

become the embodiment
of
our
base assumption
that there is
thing called
self, things
called
soul
and mind

clunkiest of all
our most arrogant
rationalizations

Language, philosophical, poem, poetry, postmodern, poststructuralist, the word

IN THE BEGINNING

in the beginning
was the word

seems so
obvious and
yet
I’ll say it

the word
and
another word

and yet
another

word after word in
crazy geometric progression

word upon word
and then
the lexicon

full of all the words
ever to exist, ever existed

no stopping the word
until the end
of that thing
we humans
call “time”

CEMETERY

wobbling all
over the tiny roads

I leant to cycle
in the cemetery
the one up
at the top
of our
cul-de-sac road

later in life
was to go
full Kawasaki

but here was enough
just to
find my balance, know
that my Dad’s
steadying hand
had released the seat

even so
rapt in this focus, on
my technological arc

was not unable to notice
the host of graves (including
my grandfather’s) and
almost at
each point of the compass
the four
small chapels

so much stone
enough to turn
regular into
philosopher with
each sweetly marked spot little
conundrum of consciousness

later
under Libra, very sign of measure,
a native of October would
blitz my
belief system

spin his sense-shattering yarn
on power and the soul

Ah,
I get it now

things binary
be unavoidable
I pedal to
negotiate them
(look Dad! No hands!
and on
only two wheels)

must to my chagrin
my sister doing much better

and still
beloved, treasured as
it is
as seminal experience

the memory
still haunts me, still

battling to
find my feet, to steer, to
thread my
consummate way
through to
the very endgame

SIDETRACK

though more a veil
than a Berlin Wall

language hides, disguises,
speaks
for itself, basically
does its own thing

is light as a feather, terrible
as a tank
sent out to crush
students of humanity

from
where I know not
things spring to mind

but when
you try to
mirror mirror them
the surface
reverses, has
no idea

where this image of clarity came from
ditto transparency, something
odd and
other in
every reflection

something sucked up into that surface
you look for certainty find
fiction of depth

and then
the voice in your head full
of the good stuff

ironic at best, conjuring up figures
crying out for partition and division

and yet
this thing difference, how
you tell yourself different

the guards at the border, duped and
sidetracked
nothing for it in the manual
but to let you pass through

AS WE SAY IN THE TRADE

as we say in the trade
you are somewhat of a solipsist

the light you are
supposed to share
we wish
you would share

you keep
steadfastly to yourself

following, I must presume,
some sublime directive
whose
shadows I have
made my
peace with at last
