WHAT THE
BISHOP TOLD ME
everything
in equipoise
(he said it
obliquely my
philosopher of Libra)
here sometimes
the most startling ideas occur
and this, for him,
will be no exception
as
he tries to map out the
board’s balance between
light and dark
attack
and defense
flow
and structure
board
and quantum field
(which
inevitably, become
metaphors of each other)
and these diagonals
remind me of
light
of lightning
divine light
defining itself
in terms of and
across a Universe too
and me
trying to win
this particular game
(by logical extension, defeat
someone who
would like
to win something)
both of us
set in the fixed fluidity of our ways
to ever even
think of going here
in principle
entertaining a volte face
turn and twist
in time/space creation
in our
thinking
one bad word
one evil move
and the structure collapses
one wrong step and the
everything gets skewed
a form of stalemate, stagnation,
zugzwang
paralysis
emptying out each and every projection
become both player and
so much part of the game
though of course
we must realize
there is
no board, no thirty-two pieces,
sixty-four squares
