IN CONTRADISTINCTION

evil is
easy

in contradistinction,
good is
exceeding hard

weigh them up:
boiling or burning those
you need, on your trajectory,
to step
or climb over

versus nails through
your wrists
or palms

yes, as
we fell so
spectacularly
and so far
it is best, and also logical,
to admit
zero or
value negative
is
starting score, is
default position

and yet
look at the beauty and innocence
of this infant

as if
it is safe here, secure
forever in this state, seemingly
protected position

not about to
take the plunge
for better
or worse

live the story, make
the journey

save or
murder
the inner child

QUITE LIKE

” History records no
phenomenon like him.”
Joachim C. Fest

the failed artist
is there nothing
quite like

the greatest of these
paint death with brush strokes
beyond anything hitherto seen

hard to
find
humanity in
such a canvas
the grey-green and
other camouflage tones
so strong, so heavy
connoisseurs will claim
they have it
in them to last
for a
thousand years

life
longer than
indomitable plague or
nuclear radiation

and this, if we
rewind the tape, or
page back to
the beginning

spoke of idyll and Apollo and
Rome and return to
the wellsprings of
pure civilization

Oh yes
when art is
distracted, fails
is humiliated

then the compensation
defies the capacity of
mere imagination

look
elsewhere
for that source

far and wide, back
to
the origin
to the beginning of time

to that primeval law
rule of cosmic violence

or closer to
home, right
in this space
time

there, millimeters deep,
just under the epidermis
of the skin
you are wearing

whether or not
you carry the tattoo

of the
failed artist, or
that which is akin, is
hopelessly like it

THE PROBLEM OF EVIL

THE PROBLEM
OF EVIL

I was planning
the perfect poem
on the problem
of evil

but it began to
degenerate even
after the first word

chaos came:
page and poem
got eaten
by weevils

to forestall
me ending up
writing

the perfect poem
for the problem of weevils

which slip-slide
is the way that poems
usually go.

OF GOOD AND EVIL

you saw the strange strange flowers
in your dream
growing in
your garden

did not know
whether to
exterminate
or tolerate,
ravage or
extend some
latitude

and so
a dialogue ensued
between alien
within and
alien without

between good
and bad, light
and dark

better that
they always oppose
each other, always
in conflict
forever
at work

than that they find
the peace of the beige, the gray
the comfortable, the lukewarm
the bland

plants this severe, if they do
not come to
kill
or possess

must be here to
heal, to bless

BEAUTIFUL

Nature is
evil

you cannot argue so
without risking
the calumny
of complete contradiction

but only
a fool
would dispute
that Nature
can be cruel

and without
which cruelty
where
the beauty

with which
so hard
to reconcile?

UPON DELIVERY

delivering (me) from
evil, such a bitch,
who would have thought it?
determined, desperate, the angels
and devils
thrown into confusion by
my poems
the morality of which
all over the place

and then the spirituality
the dude so much-deceived
into thinking
God really likes him
since that moment
at the bottom of
the swimming pool so
much to and fro

and now I sense these lines
being read as I write them
(long before I wrote them)

the
switches so
fast and furious
between thunder and bright sun
between
anger and
pleasure

but, still, the critic’s eye
and respect for every little
feeble
attempt to emulate
gloriously create

CEREAL EATER

they wanted
to be sweet
and loving

but they
misread the instructions
mixed the
wrong ingredients

every mouthful
of cereal their
beloved eating

leaving such
a poisonous,
serial-killer
type taste

and yet
that lovely
cherub-like face!

EQUIPPED

when it comes
to splicing
and dicing
(devolves
to that level)

better to
stick to metaphor
confine
yourself to
poetry

than with
god-like bravado
venture into
the genome
there
to get
inspired, be
creative
rewrite and
re-edit

this I say
whose view on
life has currently
(concurrently) been
augmented
replaced

my one eye
now a
cyclops monocle
the other
(this the
left)
a
giant
radio-telescope
(everything I see
Devil detail drawn out
to epic
cosmic proportions)

and before this
to see on the
fly as
a house fly
fully-
compounded my
Sapir-Whorf reality
(no word as
to health of
the fly which
this organ donated)
the other, courtesy of
chameleon, reptile organ-
donating transplanteer

and talking of plants
check these leaves in my hair
flowers budding
at my fingers

Oh now
truly blessed, for
can
seriously pollinate
(cross-pollinate)

with such
(as said here before, not
that you were listening)
eye
for detail

that if I were re-Adamed
plonked in that legendary
spiritual laboratory we
know as
first garden

then I would not
have missed in
all that camouflage
the true warning
signs
written in the
divine code of
shade and
of shape, of infinite
variegation

and thus
better equipped
would not have been
so keen
(so scarcely philosophical)
to seek out
that fruit, to bite
into so deeply

longing, truly
longing

for boring knowledge
of good

truly beautiful
knowledge of evil

HOUSE WARMING

HOUSE WARMING

some brought booze
some brought napalm

every culture, creed,
persuasion, orientation

the good
and the evil

all had
a good time

and I
watching as the light faded
as night settled in

how their faces, bodies looked
in the growing gloom
silhouetted against the ferocious
barbecue fires

the shades
and textures

shifting,
shuffling

living
their dreams

really
or in fiction

and speaking on behalf
of the species here gathered

I asked for
insertions, contributions, memoirs,
appendices

from any
accredited or
self-styled

acrobat
of spheres

juggler
of ideas

wondering
how many verses left
to sing in this love song

until
bottles are
empty

food flesh all gone

and not even a harmonica
to wail away
blues-
style

for the world is a hard place
and we live for each day

tomorrow, much ash and
little great recall

MYSELF HIMSELF

write myself
a superbad villain

irresistible to women
he stabbed me
through the heart

watched as I bled to death
smoking a cigarillo

or, no, come
to think of it

he was insipidly digital,
pathetically conflicted

he phished and hacked and
virused about
stole
my money through
some backdoor account

online he is
evil incarnate, is
Satan himself

or so he
likes to
think himself

such thoughts as I
consent to give him
