CARRY THE DAY

nearly drowned
on your doorstep

is it any wonder
it took me years
to like let
alone love
the green
and the gold
embracing the
thought of
what it
might become
open-
armed,
open-hearted

and that’s not
factoring in
that thing long
forgotten despite
the richness
of its inhumanity

that policy of
absolute apartness
and separation
(like the rest of
the country I seem
to have forgotten its name)

nearly drowned the day
before docking in Cape Town
passing the island
soon synonymous with shame
and triumph of will
strength of human spirit

determined as the song
millipede
determined
against
whatever odds
to
survive all
life throws at him;
carry the day
