LOST IN TRANSLATION
“poetry is what is lost in translation” Robert Frost

so we
talked about your poem

using abstract nouns

figured why it
transported us, moved
us deeply

took to someplace
we struggled
to recognize

when
we looked for
clues and cues
tried
to follow leads
we quickly
foundered

or were swept
way out to sea
(the linguistic
foundation as
fluid as
ocean not solid
as bedrock)

thus
(like some erotic twins
sensual
babes-in-the-wood)
threw
ourselves
into love

a barely less specious form
of semiotic translation
